UK is whiplash capital of Europe

Price comparison website Tiger.co.uk has welcomed the increased focus upon whiplash as a driving factor in rising motor insurance premiums.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening has recently declared the UK the whiplash capital of Europe, as the nation sees more than 1,500 claims a day.

Over the last 10 years the figures for deaths and seriously injured on the road have happily declined from 3,450 to 1,900, but at the same time car insurance quotes are inexorably rising.

Between 2005 and 2009 ABI figures show that the number of whiplash claims surged by 70%, a rise largely attributed to the increasing use of “no-win no-fee” injury claims.

Greening has announced that the coming months will see the hosting of a summit intended to look at the insurance industry, particularly motor insurance.

Tiger.co.uk Commercial Director Andrew Goulborn said that it was good news that whiplash was on the Government’s agenda.

In January the cross party Transport Committee called for the Government to introduce a higher threshold for compensation in whiplash cases.
